Everyday people are bombarded with emails making it essential to your marketing strategy to set yourself apart. When sending emails to your target audience, consider the following tactics to actually get your emails opened and read.

Keep Emails Short and to the Point

No matter how much effort you put into writing it, very few people will take the time to read a long, wordy email. Everything about your email should be short and sweet. Start with a brief subject line, preferably only 3-4 words, and try to use words or phrases that grab people’s attention. When you look at your subject line ask yourself if it makes you curious. Subject lines that make people wonder are more likely to be opened. You can accomplish this by giving them some of the information in the subject, but they have to open the email to find out the rest.

When your email is opened, make sure the information you are wanting to communicate is both valuable and to the point. If your emails are easy to read, then people are more likely to open more emails from you in the future.

Don’t Get Your Emails Spammed.

Spam filters can ruin the chances of your emails ever getting opened. While you want to have an attention grabbing subject line, there are some common words and phrases to avoid if you don’t want to get spammed. Some things to avoid in your subject line include:

• Using exclamation points.
• Any phrase that may sound like you are asking for money.
• The words: free, today, shipping, offer, and online.
• Sending the message from an email address that appears strange (use your own email if possible).
• Any kind of percentage.

Make Your Emails Valuable

People want their emails to have some kind of benefit. All of your emails should have new topics and useful information that the reader will actually find interesting. Another thing that adds value to an email is some kind of offer or reward for taking an action (just be careful your offer does not sound “spammy” in the subject line). Exclusive invitations are also opened more frequently than other types of emails.

Be Personal

Your emails should seem that they are from a friend rather than a company. Do not over use sales pitches or be impersonal. When writing the email, try to make it sound like you are talking directly to one person, not writing to the masses. When people feel a personal connection with your email, they will open your future emails.

Don’t Send Too Many Emails

It may seem tempting to send out frequent emails with the thought that the more you send, the more get read. This tactic however, can seriously backfire. Sending emails only when there is a really good offer or a very engaging subject will help build a following of readers. Over sending messages will likely get you a lot of unsubscribes or added to a spam list.

The key to any successful email is that it engages the audience. By following these tips, you can count on the emails you send actually being opened and read by your target audience.
